About Thomas Chipman, Jr.

FROM FIND A GRAVE:https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=168718644

Thomas Chipman, son of Thomas Chipman and Patricia Martha Whittlesey, was born on December 16, 1784 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut and relocated with his family to Salisbury, Addison, Vermont.

Thomas married Ruth Goodrich, daughter of Stephen Goodrich and Lois Bidwell, on November 13, 1809 at Middlebury Church of Christ. Thomas and Ruth relocated to Locke, Cayuga, New York in 1811 with the extended family of Stephen and Lois (Bidwell) Goodrich, and there had two sons and one daughter from 1811-1835.

Thomas and Ruth purchased the farm of Stephen and Lois (Bidwell) Goodrich in the northwest corner of section 46 of Locke, adjacent to the Howell Cemetery in section 45, on February 19, 1823. Thomas Chipman also owned other lands in section 45, all also near the Howell Cemetery.

Thomas Chipman died on June 15, 1859 and his wife Ruth died on August 9, 1870. Both may have been buried near their parents in the Howell Cemetery, also known as the Chipman Corners Cemetery, just 225 yards from the Chipman homestead, which has been abandoned for as many as 150 years or more. The tombstones of their parents, though two of four were knocked down by tree roots and one these two has almost disappeared entirely under the ground, are still visible, yet the tombstones of Thomas and Ruth, if they were buried here at one time, are among many in this abandoned cemetery that are no longer visible.

Tombstone inscriptions for Thomas and Ruth (Goodrich) Chipman were inscribed on the back of tombstones of the family of nephew Chauncey Trumble and his wife Philinda, with whom the widow Ruth had lived in Locke in the 1860-1870 US Census, in the Groton Rural Cemetery in Groton, Tompkins, New York, and the notation (rem-bur) in an online listing of Groton Rural Cemetery suggests the possibility that the burials of Thomas and Ruth could have been moved there.
