About Thomas Colby

Birth and Early Life

Thomas Colby, Jr. was born on 25 December 1757 in Kingston, Province of New Hampshire to Thomas Colby (1734-1760) and Susannah Ring (1727-1760). His parents both died when he was very young. He was baptized on 12 February 1768 in South Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire.[1]

Military Service

On 12 July 1832, Thomas Colby, of Danville, Vermont, aged 74 years, deposed the following facts:

1)That he enlisted at South Hampton, New Hampshire, in July 1776, and served five months under Capt. Joseph Chandler, of Epping, New Hampshire, who died at Mount Independence (Orwell, Vermont, 2½ miles across the Lake from Fort Ticonderoga), soon after their arrival there, also under Lieut. William Wallace, in Col. Wymans regiment. 2)That they marched from South Hampton, New Hampshire, through Concord and Charlestown, New Hampshire, Rutland, Vermont, and Skeensboro (now Whitehill), New York to Mt. Independence, where he served his term as stated. 3)That in April 1777, he enlisted from Amesbury and served two months under Captain Merrill at Rhode Island, guarding stores and building breastworks. (Note: In this he was mistaken. His Massachusetts service was as a private in Capt. Moses Nowell's company, Col. Benjamin Titcomb's regiment, at Rhode Island, from 4 May 1777 to 4 July 1777, 2 months, 9 days, including travel allowance. Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Rev. War.) 4)That in June 1778, he enlisted at Kingston, New Hampshire; marched to Rhode Island, by way of Taunton, Massachusetts; crossed onto the island (of Rhode Island) at Howland's Ferry, and was stationed at Butt's Hill for a time; then down further on the island, then back to Providence and Pawtuxet, where he was discharged. 5)That he volunteered in the spring of 1780, under Capt. Moses Nowell, at Newburyport, Massachusetts, marched by way of Worcester, Massachusetts and Springfield, Massachusetts, to West Point, New York, at which place, and at a place called Robinson's farm on the opposite side of the river, he served out his six months term. This testimony was followed with depositions from others who even served with him, but in the long run, they turned the pension that he deserved down because some of the facts were not remembered exactly. For instance, after his death, when Lydia (Webster) Colby testified about their marriage, she gave the name of the minister who married them as Mr. Ames and it was actually Mr. Earmes.

Thomas Colby, Jr. and Lydia Webster were married in June 1784 in Kingston, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA by Rev. Jonathan Earmes of the Congregational Church of Newtown (minister there from 1759-1791).
