"The ancestry of the family can be traced back to John Cole, who was born in England in 167O and came to America at an early day, settling at Rehoboth, now Secunk, Rhode Island. His son, John Cole, Jr., [SIC] was born in England about 1705 [SIC] and came to America with his father. His first wife was a sister of Benjamin Franklin. For his second wife he chose Mary Bowen and they had five children. Their second son was Thomas Cole, who was born in Sterling, Connecticut, August 25, 1735, and died in Oxford, New York, October 25, 1827"
