About Thomas Croese

From the "Clarence and Richmond Examiner" of Tuesday 8 January 1895: "Nothing further has yet been learned of the death of Thomas Croese except that he had been doing fairly well gold digging at White Feather, Western Australia. Croese was nearly 26 years of age. Very general regret has been expressed at the death of the poor fellow, who was a great favourite with the public. Can any medical man explain how it is that typhoid fever should be so fatal: with athletes who have shown remarkable powers of strength and endurance? Both Searle and O'Connor died of typhoid, also two of our most, promising amateurs-H. Kelly and J. A. Fairfax."

Death also reported in the "Western Mail" of Saturday 19 January 1895: "DEATH OF A PROMINENT OARSMAN. HE DIES OF FEVER AT COOLGARDIE. From the Sydney Mail we learn that T. Croese, who was well known in professional circles in New Soath Wales a few years ago, and was a general favourite there, recently succumbed to typhoid fever on the West Australian goldfields at the age of twenty six. In referring to the untimely end of this powerfal young man, " Trident" asks-" Can any of our medical men tell us how it is that strong, powerful, and apparently healthy athletes, so readily fall victims to this terrible fever ? Many instances could be mentioned of the deaths of athletes from this cause, and an answer to the question would be valuable to the athletic world."

From "The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser" of Saturday 12 November 1892: "Thomas Croese, the Newcastle sculler, won the outrigger race at the Grafton Regatta on Wednesday."
