About Thomas Marion Dow

Thomas and two brothers took up land in "Volunteers' Land" east to Plainfield and north of Voluntown in Conn. in 1715, among 30 original lot holders. They applied at once for annexation of Plainfield, but were refused and the place was annexed to Voluntown in 1719. The homestead of Thomas was near the Plainfield line and all his records are there. He became the Squire of Plainfield. Died May 20, 1760, his will dated May 17, probated Oct. 17 mentions wife Mary, which is the only record of her. Thomas built the church. The community was Presbyterian. Brother Ebenezer signed the Westminster Confession of Faith, but Thomas and brother Ephraim refused. However, Thomas attended regularly. Farmer. Vital records were not begun until Thomas' five young children died in dysentery epidemic. "For a century and a half it was the custom to build a well just by and below the cesspool." 13 children are listed from family sources, but it is possible some belong to his brothers.
