GEDCOM Note

FAMILY RECORD IN FAMILY BIBLE- LEFT TO THOMAS J. FLEMING (then left to his daughter, Evelyn Fleming Martin) Cousin Evelyn sent typed records-taken from the Fleming Family Bible. Below is listed the record-written originally in what is presumably the handwriting of Anna Webb Fleming for her generation and by John Tarleton Fleming for «u»his«/u» family..."apparently written where he found room on the 4 pages allotted between the Old Testament and the Apocrypha of this large bible. There is no flyleaf or backs-but the first page gives the Genesis ! chapter, so the Bible is complete, but in very old condition-flyleaf preceding the New Testament notes the date as 1811." NOTE: I also have four page hand-written document-from Thomas Jefferson Fleming-but probably not written by him. The first page is stamped: Pension Office Jun 11 1883; presumably it was to testify as to the identity of Thomas Jefferson's father John Tarlton Fleming for his request for a War of 1812 pension. It gives the some of the records from Family Bible but is preceded by the following-as written: State of Iowa Page County Thomas J. Fleming of Amity Township in the county of Page and State of Iowa, being duly sworn deposes and says, My age is thirty-eight (38) years. That I am a son of John T. Fleming and Sarah Fleming, his wife. That I am the Custodian of the Family Bible owned , and kept first by My grand Father William Randolph Fleming and afterward owned and kept by My Father John T. Fleming. That said Bible came into my possession in the Spring of 1873, at which time My Father John T. Fleming removed from Page County, Iowa, to the Pacific Coast and at which time, he left his Bible with me as he had more baggage than he could find room to pack for removal. In said Bible appear the following Entries under the printed heading Familly Record, which entries are here copied and marked Exhibit A. Deponent Further says that the foregoiing Exhibit marked Exhibit A, is a full and complete, and correct copy of the Record entries..found in the old family bible now in my custody, so far as the same pertain to the family of John T Fleming. That for some reason said record does not show the entry of the Birth of the three younger children of said family viz Susan Mary Flemling, Thomas J. Fleming and Lucretia Jane Fleming. Deponent further says that he has no interest directly or indirectly in the prosecuton of this claim for pension. (Signature) Thomas J. Fleming Subscribed and Sworn to my Thomas J. Fleming before me and in my presence this 21 day of May 1883 and I certify that I am not interested n the claim and I further certify that Exhibit :A: Copy of Family Record is correct and that the original was presented to me and appears to be be genuine (signed) J E Hill Clerk Dist. Court Then, headed Exhibit A, are the Bible records-written in what looks like the same handwriting as the rest of the document. However, this document ends with the death of Susan Mary Fleming. The records from Evelyn end with the death of Mrs. Anna Fleming as entered below.

  • Several of the names, lacking surnames...might they have been born to slaves? It's interesting that they would have been included in a family Bible.
