From Carolyn Burch: Thomas has two entries in the 1870 census one for June 2nd where he is listed in his mother´s household in Jackson Twp. Ashland Co. Ohio (as teaching school), the other June 16 where he is listed in the household of farmer Philip Shockey in Perry Twp. Ashland Co. OH. It would have been a common practice for a school teacher to board with a family in the district. Thomas is listed in a Baldwin Wallace University catalog in the sophomore class 1870-71 and the junior class 1871-72. So, if he continued on, he might have graduated in 1873. It would be my guess that the photo was for his graduation, hence 1873.
