His wife, Isabella Campbell Flack, came from Scotland. According to the Album of History and Biography of Meeker County Minnesota, she died in Ireland in 1839. Perhaps her death was related to the birth of her last child, Margaret. On Nov. 18, 1850, Thomas arrived in New York aboard the Columbia. Within three years, he had settled in Pennfield, Michigan. That's where he married his second wife, Elida McGraw, on Feb. 15, 1853. By 1860, the Hamiltons were in nearby Bellevue. Thomas "was an educated man and a school teacher for many years; clerk in the Presbyterian Church, of which he was an exemplary member, and otherwise was prominent in the locality in which he lived." His sons, James and Samuel, married the Irish Campbell sisters, Ann and Mary, respectively. Perhaps they were related to their mother Isabella's family. Goyne, Samuel and William all moved to Minnesota. John had a farm in Bellevue before moving to Battle Creek, where his sister Margaret lived. James remained near his father in Convis Township. John probably surprised his father and the rest of the family by converting to the Catholic faith.
