About Thomas Howard, Jr

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA with the rank of Private. DAR Ancestor # A090663

PENSION APPLICATION OF THOMAS HOWARD, #S.45796 -

States he was born June 8, 1750 in Wilkes County, GA. While a resident of Montgomery County, VA he enlisted in June 1778, and served three years as a Private in Captain Jesse Evans Company in Colonel John Montgomery's Regiment VA line. He was in the battles of Vincennes and Pickaway and in other skirmishes with the Indians. Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at $80 to commence on the 4th March 1831. Duplicate certificate issued October 28th 1851 and sent to L.F.I. Trabue, Frankfort, KY. Thomas Howard states in this application that he was born in Georgia, in Wilkes County [now] on the 8th day of June 1750 and know his age from his father having it set down in a book and having seen it often. He lived in Montgomery County VA when called into service and moved here [Perry County] thirty-seven years since the Revolutionary War [1820] and now lives in Perry County KY. It was a new county formed out of Floyd and Clay Counties. He enlisted for three years and was promised land when he enlisted which he never got. He stated that his brother James, who was eighty-one years old in 1833 and a resident of Perry County KY served with him and that his father was murdered by Indians. On December 24, 1833 Thomas Howard aged 83 appeared in before a Justice of the Peace of Perry County KY and made declaration as to his Revolutionary War service. Mr. William Coffee, a Clergyman, of Perry County and James Howard residing in the same certifies that they are well acquainted with Thomas Howard and believe him to be 83 years old and to have been a soldier of the Revolution. Included in the pension file is a reference to "widow" Frances or Franky. A letter is included in the rear of the file regarding Frances as of October 1853 seeking to get pension reinstated as her husband Thomas had died in January of 1853. This has provided descrepancy and questions as to the above pension and service being accurate. As well as regards Thomas, his age is consistent in all census records EXCEPT for the pension application when he seems to have added 20 years to his age.

However, it is important to note that in this file, the original application mentions no widow, spouse, or minor children, only a brother James. As Frances was very much alive, and did indeed have children during this time period (1833), it is passing strange that no mention was made of them - the only record of a spouse being found is in subsequent letters and documents. In fact.....the pension application of Thomas states: "he nor his brothe

The rumor that he was killed by raiding Indians is refuted by Elizabeth Salyer in her book

MEMORIAL PHOTOS 5 FLOWERS 121 Thomas was born in Wilkes County, Georgia to Thomas Howard, Sr. and Lettica "Letty" Durham. He was married to Frances Jackson. Thomas and Frances had 11 children: Moses m. Mary Ann Patrick, William m Anna Arnett, Matilda m. Joseph J.Montgomery, Letty m. John J. Montgomery, Cynthia m. John Phipps, James m. Sarah Lemaster, Henry m. Elizabeth Cottle, Reubin m. Nancy Arnett, Andrew m. Matilda Ray, Elizabeth m. John Risner, and Nancy m. Archibald Risner. Recently his gravestone was discovered by Manton Ray, in an overgrown section of the cemetery, with other Howard family members, which Manton so graciously cleared off. THOMAS WAS MY 3RD GREAT-GRANDFATHER.

There are some who say that Thomas (1770) was married to Polly Patrick, but I don't believe that to be the case. There is no known record for this, not one. I think that there may have been some confusion because the son of Thomas and Frances, Moses Howard married Mary Ann "Polly" Patrick. Furthermore, Thomas and Frances are shown together in the 1850 census, three years before his death. If he were married to a Polly Patrick, they would have been together then. His cenotaph in the Howard Cemetery in Maggard, only lists he, Frances and their children.
