  • Mary Tidd was a daughter of John Tidd. It is claimed that Francis left England against the wishes of his family, using the name of Miles, until he was settled in this country. Francis was admitted freeman 10 May, 1648. He served the town as selectman, held numerous other offices and was looked upon as "a gentleman of great respectability and influence." He owned and operated a corn mill in Woburn, being a miller by trade. The mill now on the old Kendall homestead was built by Samuel Kendall in 1700 and is near the location of the first mill built bv Francis.

  • The emigrants to this country were Francis and Deacon Thomas Kendall, who sailed from England under the alias of Miles, again taking the name of Kandall on reaching this country. Their father, John Kendall, lived in Cambridge, England, in 1646, and died there in 1660. Francis Kendall is the common ancestor of all the Kendalls in this country, Deacon Thomas having ten daughters but no sons.
  • Francis Kendall, above mentioned, was in Charlestown, Massachusetts, prior to 1640. He was a large landholder and a miller by occupatin. He died in 1708. He married, at Woburn, Massachusetts, December 24, 1644, Mary Tidd, and their sons, born in Woburn, Massachusetts, were: John, July 2, 1646; 'Thomas, January 10, 1648'; Samuel, March 8, 1659; Jacob, January 25, 1660. John Tidd, Tead, Ted or Teed, embarked May 12, 1637, at Yarmouth England, aged nineteen, as servant of Samuel Greenfield, of Norwich. Was of Charlestown that year, subscribed there December, 1640, "Town Orders" for Woburn, taxed at Woburn 1645, chosen surveyor of fences 1646. HIs wife Margaret died in 1651. He had second wife Alice, daughters Mary and Elizabeth, and a son John. His daughter Mary was doubtless wife of Francis Kendall.
    • ' Thomas Kendall, second son of Francis and Mary (Tidd) Kendall, born January 10, 1648, married, at Woburn 1673, Ruth Blogget, daughter of Samuel Blogget, Sr., of Woburn. Ruth Kendall died December 18, 1695. The male children of their family were: Thomas, born May 19, 1677; Samuel, October 29, 1682; Ralph, May 4, 1685; Eleazer, November 16, 1687; Jabez, September 10, 1692. Samuel Blogget, Sr. was born in England, brought by parents to America when one and a half years old, came to Woburn to reside, married Ruth Iggleden, of Boston, December 13, 1655. He died July 3, 1687, and his widow October 14, 1703.
      • Thomas Kendall, eldest son of 'Thomas and Ruth (Blogget) Kendall', born May 19, 1677, married Sarah, daughter of Rev. Thomas Cheever, at Boston, Massachusetts, November 7, 1701. They lived first in Woburn, where four children were born, moving to Lexington about 1710 and to Framingham, 1761. History of Framingham gives Benjamin, baptized in Lexington, as their first born child. History of Lexington records the birth of three children born before him in Woburn. This discrepancy in the Framingham records has misled those who have tried to follow this Kendall line. Their children, born in Woburn, were Sarah, September 7, 1702; Thomas, July 30, 1704; Abigail, August 10, 1706; Benjamin, 1708. Those born in Lexington were: Mary, 1711; Josiah, 1713; Ezekial, 1715; Elizabeth, 1716; Ruth, 1720; Jane, 1722; Elijah and Elisha, 1725. Ezekial Cheever, born in London, England, January 25, 1614, came to Boston in 1637, died in Boston, August 21, 1708. He was famous as master of Boston Latin School, went to New Haven, Connecticut, 1638, thence to Ipswich, Massachusetts, thence to Charlestown, Massachusetts, and finally in 1671 to Boston, where he resided until his death. Rev. Thomas Cheever, son of Ezakial, born in Ipswich, August 23, 1656, graduated in Harvard College, 1677, first pastor of First Church, Chelsea, 1715, died in Chelsea, November 27, 1749. Married Sarah Bill, daughter of James Bill, Sr., of Pullen Point. Sarah Cheever died January 30, 1701. Sarah, daughter of Rev. Thomas and Sarah (Bill) Cheever, married in Boston, November 7, 1701, Thomas Kendall of the fourth generation.

  • KENDALL.
  • Kendall is a family name of local derivation, borrowed from Kent-dale, that is, a dale in the County of Kent, England; or, as may be thought by some, from Kendal, a noted town in Westmoreland County, on the borders of the river Ken. From one or the other of these sources, the Kendal(s) or Kendall(s) in England prob. derived their origin and their name.
    • KENDALL.
  • Francis Kendall, born in England, is supposed to have been the common ancestor of all of his name in New England. He was in Charlestown, 1640, where he subscribed the "Town Orders" for Woburn in December of that year; and was taxed among the earliest inhabitants of Woburn, 1645. The record of his marriage there reads thus: "ffrancis Kendall, alias Miles and Mary Tedd (Tidd) maryed 24th of *10th month [24 *Dec.] 1644;" which lends support to a family tradition, communicated many years ago by Rev. Dr. Kendall of Weston, that in order to conceal from his parents his intentions to emigrate to this country, he embarked in England under a feigned name. His children by his wife Mary were (1) John b. July 2, 1646. '(2) Thomas b. Jan 10, 1648/9'. (3) Mary b. Jan 20, 1650/1; m. Israel Reed about 1669. (4) Elizabeth b. Jan 15, 1652/3 m. James Peirce. (5) Hannah b. Jan 26, 1654/5 m. William Green, Jun'r as his 2nd wife. (6) Rebekah b. Mar 2, 1657; m. Joshua Eaton; deceased in 1706. (7) Samuel b. Mar 8, 1659. (8) Jacob b. Jan 25, 1660/1. (9) Abigail b. April 6, 1666; m. William "Read," May 24, 1686.
  • Mary, his wife, died in 1705. "Francis Kendall, Sen'r died 1708," when, according to a testimony given by him in Court, 1700, he must have been 88 years old. He was a gentleman of great respectability and influence in the place of his residence. He served the town at different times, 18 years on the Board of Selectmen; and was often appointed on important committees, especially on one for distributing the common lands of the town, 1664 and on another, respecting the erection of the second meeting-house, 1672.
  • In his Will dated May 9, 1706, when he was "stricken in years," (he writes), "and expecting daily his change," he styles himself a miller; and gives one half of his mill, with a proportionate interest in the streams, dams and untensils thereto belonging, to his son, John; one-quarter to 'Thomas', and one-quarter to Samuel. This mill has ever since been in the possession of his posterity. Its present owner and occupant, Mr. Joseph R. Kendall, a descendant from 'Thomas', second son of Francis, is of the 6th generation from its original proprietor.

  • Descendants of these four brothers, who made Woburn their place of permanent residence, were formerly very numerous. Individuals of the name and connection still remain in the town, but have much dwindled of late in respect to the numbers. But multitudes of Kendalls have gone forth from Woburn, to replenish other towns of the Commonwealth. Tewksbury and Sherborn, in Middlesex County, and Athol, Lancaster, Leominster and Sterling in Worcester County, have all been more or less indebted to Woburn for her many sons and daughters, Kendalls by name or birth, whom she has contributed to help settle those towns, or when settled already, to increase their number of inhabitants. And no family of Kendalls in Woburn has done more to swell the tide of emigration towards the towns above mentioned than that of Samuel Kendall, grandson of Francis, and son of 'Thomas and Ruth Kendall', born in Woburn October 29, 1682. He was a carpenter by trade; and formerly known far and wide beyond his native place as Lieutenant Kendall, from having received a Lieutenant's commission from Governor Belcher, Oct 5, 1732. He was a very active, enterprising, public spirited man, often employed in town . . . .
