About Thomas Large

GEDCOM Note

He ARRIVED ON THE SSHIP oRLENA. Mercury 1 October 1868 LARGE. -On the 30th September at his residence, Letitia street, Mr. Thomas Large, aged 53 years. Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will leave his late residence on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. Schouten House Built in 1844 as the Swansea Inn, Schouten House was a wedding present from William Champion to his daughter Theresa who married Samuel Welland and moved to Swansea. Tragically she died several years into the marriage and the property was bought by Hobart publican, Mr. Large and his wife with the intention of developing a brewery on the site in 1850. The couple with their six chldren aged 6-12 took passage from Hobart on the 'Resolution' to take up residence. On arrival at Swansea the ship encountered severe winds and rough seas at Oyster Bay and was lost. Large and his wife survived the disaster but their children perished, and the equipment to establish the new business was lost. Devastated, they returned to Hobart and abandoned their plans. A monument near the beach opposite the site remembers the tragedy. Welland pursued the idea of a brewery and in the mid 1850's sold the property to Alexander Graham who converted it into a Grammar School for boys. The venture failed and it was sold to a doctor around 1860 and was a residence for 80 years. In the 1950s it was bought by the Dominic Savio Catholic College as a weekend retreat but fell into disrepair and was sold in the late 1970s. In the 1980s it was bought by the Fiddler family and restored as a B&B and restaurant which it remains today. See 'Resolution story'
