About Thomas Robert Luce, Sr.

My name is Thomas Robert Luce as feb 2016 of Cincinnati, Ohio (of Bethel, Ohio). I am a descendent of Eleazer Luce, the son and 5th child of Henry and Remember (Litchfield) Luce of Martha's Vineyard, Mass. I recently celebrated my 75th birthday, and have been doing research on my ancestors for most of my adult life.

I am one of the five co-compilers of the following five volumes on our Luce Family: Martha F. McCourt, Thomas R. Luce, Robert L. Massard, Catherine M. Mayhew, and Alan Lee Williams,The American Descendants of Henry Luce of Martha's Vineyard. 5 vols. (Vancouver, Wash.: M.J.F. McCourt, 1994-99). Distributed by The New England Historic Genealogical Society of Boston, MA.

The first record we have of Henry Luce the immigrant is on November 13, 1666, when he was a juror in Scituate, where he may have resided, and in 1668 he was admitted as a proprietor of purchased lands in Rehoboth. The similarity of the name to LEWIS, together with the varieties of spelling both names in early records, renders identification difficult. LEWIS was written LUIS, LUICE, LEWES; and LUCE appears as LEWS, LEWSE, LUICE and LUSE. When he came to the Vineyard, or through what connection, is not known, but he had acquired before Feb. 1, 1671, a home lot on the west side of Old Mill river about forty rods north of Scotchman's Bridge road.

Many LUCE family researchers have collectively conducted thousands of hours of genealogical research in America and abroad, in an effort to find proof of HENRY LUCE'S origins. Several theories exist, but none to my knowledge have been successfully proven.

I started "The Luce Surname DNA Project" about six years ago with Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas and am currently its Project Administrator. This is a project that will will hopefully allow participants to compare their Y-DNA with HENRY’S, and to discover further clues leading to HENRY’S ancestry.

Several descendants of the Luce family from the Channel Islands, and Canada are currently active in American genealogy, but have not yet proven to my knowledge, a relationship to our Henry Luce. One of the goals of this project is to compare Henry’s DNA to living male members of the Luce family throughout the world not presently known to be connected to him by a proven genealogical paper trail, and thereby help prove Henry's ancestry.
