About Thomas Turner Mercer, PhD
Dr Thomas Mercer was born in Victoria, Canada. His parents were Albert A Mercer and Anna L Rodgers. His siblings were Helen, Robert A and Frank A. Thomas married Virginia Mae Kidd in Pierce, Washington on June 27, 1942. Thomas joined the US military in 1942. In 1943 Thomas became a naturalized US citizen in Tuscon, Arizona. Together Thomas and Virginia had three children, Sally Ann Mercer, billionaire Robert Leroy Mercer and Randall Wayne Mercer. He received a degree in Physics and Chemistry from San Jose College. He completed his PhD within two years at the University of Rochester. His main field of study was aerosol research in which he published more than 50 papers. He also wrote a book, Aerosol Technology in Hazard Evaluation (Academic Press, 1973). He ultimately became a professor at the University of Rochester. He retired in 1982 and moved to Sarasota, Florida with his wife planning on writing articles and a book. Instead he had a long progressive illness which deteriorated his mind. In 1993 his wife Virginia went to go visit their daughter Sally Ann Mercer in Pennsylvania. Another car hit some ice and ran into them killing Virginia and injuring Sally. Thomas died two weeks later in Florida at the age of 72.
