About Thomas Newell

The Newells owned a sawmill where some of the Petticrew family worked.

ROCKBRIDGE CO Case 1826-008==

  • Plaintiff(s) Thomas Newill
  • Defendant(s) Alexander Johnston

William Petticrew was a witness in this case, and the record includes his deposition. It shows that sometime around 1820 he was a sawyer in the sawmill of Thomas Newell on Newell's plantation in Botetourt Co.

William's brother, John Petticrew (wife Mary Ward), was the father of James Ward Pettigrew who married Thomas and Nancy Newell's daughter, Mary Harrison Trigg Newell.

I don't know if Thomas Newill, plaintiff, was this Thomas or his father, but in any case the Petticrew/Pettigrew family worked with the Newell family.
