About Thomas Notte

  • Thomas Notte was the son of Anthony Notte & his wife Frances. He was born AFTER 1577 when the wardship & marriage of Anthony Notte, a minor, was left to his mother Elizabeth and 1586, when Anthony died. His mother Frances was alive until at least 1595 [tax records].
  • He was apparently in Ireland by 1608; Casey Index, Vol 7. Thomas Notte included in a list of loyal English of Carbery James I 1608
  • He married Elizabeth Olden, widow of John Winthropp after 1613 [when John died].

In the Surrey Archives, dated 2nd Feb 1616, is a "Deed of Covenant to Levy Fine" as follows: "1) Thomas Notte of Long Ditton, Esq., Robert de la Hay of Lincoln's Inn, Middlesex, gent, and George French of Furnivale's Inn, Middlesex, gent 2) Morgan Polden of Kiltoe [Kilcoe] Castle, Carbery, Cork, gent, and John Polden Closse of New Sarum, Wiltshire 1) to 2) on marriage of Thomas Notte and Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Polden and sister of Morgan Polden".

  • Elizabeth died sometime before 19 October 1631 when she was mentioned as being deceased. Her husband and family were still living at Aghadown after 1631.

Note: This record is written as if the remainder of the 1611 enfeoffment was left to Elizabeth and Anne and their husbands, though they were not married until after 1613. The record was made in 1638 and made note of the sister's conveyance of their land in the 1630s, and so included their husbands' names.
Partial Extract: "Winthorpe, John of Aghedowne, gent 26 June 1611... the use of himself & Eliz: Paulden his wife for life; rem[ain]d[e]r to Eliz: Wife of Peregrine Baniste Esq. & to Anne Wife of Henry Hoskins, Gent, Daughters of the said Eliz: Paulden, and their Heirs - After the decease of the said Winthorpe & Wife, the said Bannister & Wife [conveyed their portion on] 19 Oct[obe]r 1631..."

  • On 20 Februray 1634, Thomas Notte acted as administrator to the estate of John Winthrop the younger of Aghadown.

Winthrop, p. 9, "John Winthrop the younger, of Aghadowne... on the 20th Feb., 1634, an administration of his intestate estate was granted to his step-father, Thomas Nott of Aghadowne" (Internet Archive).

Gent and heir of Anthony Notte of Surrey. He married Elizabeth Olden, daughter of Thomas Olden of Rogagan, Co Cork, Gent, & widow of John Winthropp of Gratten in England. Had issue, 4 daughters; Elizabeth Notte married Henry Beecher of Archadown. Frances Notte, Mary Notte. Anne Notte Thomas Notte died at Bruffe. Recorded Ulster office March 24, 1636. Testified by Elizabeth and Frances Notte.

Thomas Notte settled at Aughadown, Co. Cork, Ireland, where he diedin Limerick in 1636.
