Thomas Peter O’Connell was born on October 31, 1925, at Garryowen, Iowa, the son of Timothy and Kathryn (Shields) O’Connell. He was raised and educated in the Garryowen and Cascade area attending rural school and was engaged in farming.

On December 2, 1950, Tom was united in marriage to Gladys Martens at St. John’s Catholic Church in Delhi. Together they farmed in Delhi and Hopkinton area until 1962 when they moved to farm west of Manchester.

Tom died suddenly on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was eighty-one years of age. He loved to farm and was still active in farming, and also enjoyed reading, working with numbers, and talking politics.

Survivors include his daughters, Christine “Christy” Tegeler of Manchester and Cindy (Duane) Cloyed of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Mark (Jill) Tegeler, Jennifer (Corey) Coleman, Michelle (special friend, Jason) Tegeler, and Jordan Cloyed; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Alyssa Tegeler; one sister, Mary Johnson of New Hampton; and sisters-in-law, Margaret O’Connell of Delhi and Ilene O’Connell of Earlville.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys in 1964; a daughter, Kathy, in 1978; his parents; two brothers, Joseph O’Connell and Frank O’Connell; and brother-in-law, Harry Johnson. Memorials may be directed to Dollars for Scholars.
