About Thomas Phillip Orth

Thomas Phillip Orth, 83, of Portsmouth, went to be with his Lord, Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the SOMC Hospice Center.

He was born September 19, 1927 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Edward James and Mary Lucy Alexander Orth.

Tom was a self-employeed barber for 20 years, and he retired from the former Goodyear Atomic Corporation after 15 years of service working as a boiler operator in the steam plant. Tom was a World War II era Army Air Force veteran, having earned the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. He was chaplain of the DAV Chapter #10, and a member of the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion.

Tom was a dedicated and active member of Calvary Baptist Church where he and his wife, Faye, started the church's bus ministry. He was also an usher and member of the church's Auditorium Bible Class. Tom was also a 1945 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Faye Rigg Orth, whom he married February 12, 1955 in Washington, KY; a sister, Phyllis Ann Sparks of Wheelersburg, very special friends, Jim and Peggy Scott of Portsmouth; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

In addition to his parents, Tom was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Edward and Burl Robert Orth; and three sisters, Melba Clapham, Dora Mae Huffman and Mildred McCall.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Ryan Brown officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Dickey Post Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 7 pm, and Monday from 10 to 11 am.
