Thomas Rice was an Englishman by birth, of Welsh extraction. He was an early adventurer into Virginia; where he spent the first part of his life is not certain. In the later part of his life, he owned a small plantation in the lower part of what is now Hanover County, Virginia. Here he left his wife, with nine sons and three daughters, and returned to England to receive a considerable estate which had been left to him, but returned no more. The sailors reported that he had died at sea. It is supposed that he was assassinated. No return was ever made of the property after which he had gone, and his family were left destitute in a strange land. The family left without an earthly father were distressed, but part of them moved about thirty miles up the country where they procured a small plantation, on which they raised numerous families; four or five of them became serious preachers of religion, and were succeeded in their religious profession by a considerable number of their children. Thomas' wife Marcey, was esteemed truly a religious woman.

"Thomas Rice, the emigrant 1680 had nine sons and three daughters. His son David married Susannah Searcy and had David, "The Apostle to Kentucky" who married Mary Blair 1762."

Notes

Thomas Rice came to Virginia in 1683, which is confirmed by records in the Bristol Register. He married a woman named Marcey, and St. Peter's Parish records in New Kent County show them having a son, Edward, born on 17 April 1690 (IGI North America C504901).This Edward Rice died in Goochland County in 1769 and in his will named his wife Mary, who was said to be a Claiborne.

Thomas was born about 1656 in England. He was the son of Edward Rice and Mary Claiborne. He reportedly died at sea en route to (or from) England to claim an inheritance between 1711 and 1716. "Thomas came to America aboard the Bristol Merchant in 1679/80 assigned as an apprentice to John Stephens." He was transported by one George Alves/Alvis who was granted "1014 acs. New Kent Co. in St. Peters Par: on both sides of Totpotomous Cr. 24 Apr 1700..." for the transport of 21 persons, including Thomas Rice. He is first found in records when the baptism of his son James was recorded 4 April 1686 in the records of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia Colony. 29 April 1693, a patent from Sir Edmond Andros, Kt., "to Thomas Rice for land lying in Kingston Parish, in Gloucester county, said land being due unto said Thomas Rice by and for the importation of one person into this colony." Tho. Rice is listed on the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls, 1704: New Kent County with 300 acres. There is also Thomas Rice in Gloucester County with 34 acres. Is this the land granted to Thomas Rice in 1693? Is it the same Thomas as our subject here? The baptisms of seven of his children -- James, Thomas, Edward, John, Mary, Alice, and Marcy -- were recorded in the Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County. He is mentioned in the parish records of St. Paul's Parish, New Kent and Hanover County (formed from New Kent Co. in 1721) on September 24, 1708 and November 26, 1711. On March 31, 1716 his wife, Marcy, is mentioned as "Widd: Rice." The Widdow Rice, or Marcy Rice, is found in records there until 1722.
