About Thomas Roberts

Note about DNA matches

A descendant of Thomas Roberds has a very specific DNA overlap with a descendant of the family of Jacob Wood and Johannah Wood , which is shared by a half-dozen other descendants of this couple. Unless the relationship can be explained by a heretofore unknown link that has not yet been found, therefore, it must be the case that Thomas's mother was in fact a Wood, not Martha Runyon.

The dates work, and the places work, since the Wood family lived on Staten Island until sometime after 1764, at which point they removed to Bedford County, PA.

There is also a marriage record between a Martha Runyon and Freeman Roberds in 1768, where they are described both as being of Bucks County, PA.

There are two possibilities here. The first possibility is that Martha Runyon in 1768 was in fact widow Runyon; she was a Runyon by marriage. This is plausible date-wise; marriages at the time took place around age 18-21, not as late as 28. But there are, I gather, DNA matches between descendants of Martha Runyon and descendants of her brothers John and Isaac, so that rules out the "widow Runyan" possibility. I believe the son of Martha that has the DNA linked descendants was Joseph, who was born in 1776.

That leaves the second possibility, which is that Martha Runyon died around 1778, and Freeman Roberds remarried to a Wood, possibly also named Martha. The dates are such that this marriage would necessarily have taken place in Pennsylvania, and would also imply that the Wood family stayed in Bucks County for some years before moving to Bedford County. All of this needs to be confirmed as plausible before hypothesizing a Martha Wood second wife.
