Thomas Farwell Roper

1. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

Thomas Farwell Roper, (the eldest son of Thomas Roper and Mary James) was b. 7 Nov 1795, England, bapt. in Whitechurch Canonicorum on Jan 23, 1798. In the 1841 census for Musbury, Devon, Thomas 40 was a tanner, living with his sister, Sarah Roper 25, both shown as not born in Devon. He died on 30 Jan. 1842 in Musbury, Devon, England aged 46, bur. 7 Feb 1842 in Chideock, Dorset, England, m.i. in Chideock; will p.c.c., prob 11/1963, 20 May, 1842 - his beneficiaries included his sisters, Anne Moly and Mary; no issue.

South Face - Entombed here / are the mortal remains of / THOMAS FARWELL ROPER / of Musbury, Devon, eldest son of THOMAS ROPER Gent. / and MARY his wife, the daughter of / WILLIAM JAMES of Colmer in this County, Gent. / Their remains are also deposited near this spot. / Possessed of great vigour of mind / combined with suavity of manners / he was enabled to direct an extensive business / and finally to sustain with great Christian fortitude / a most lingering affliction / He departed this life universally esteemed and regretted / January 30th 1842 aged 46 years.

West Face - Also in Memory of / MARY SARAH SYMONDS ROPER / (Relict of the late JOHN ROPER) / whose body rests on the south side of this vault / died at Bridport / 21st October 1883 / Aged 51.

North Face - Also in Memory of / EDITH third daughter of THOMAS and MARY ROPER / who died at Clapton, Somerset / March 8th 1869 aged 61 / Also WILLIAM JAMES, second son of / THOMAS and MARY ROPER / who died at Allington, Bridport, Dorset / September 5th., 1875 aged 75 / Also of JOHN, youngest brother of the above / who died at Bridport / January 28th 1878, aged 73.
