BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
Thomas Roper Berry, (son of George Warry Berry and Mary Roper) b. c1829 in Thorncombe and bapt. on Feb. 26, 1829 in Hawkchurch, Devon, England (BVRI-2). At the 1851 census in Taunton, Thomas 20, unmarried, was assistant to a linen and woollen draper. He migrated to Victoria, BC, Canada, via Panama and San Francisco in c1862. In Canada, he called himself Thomas Roper [?legal name change?] He m Nellie Newman, who was born c 1832 - 1841 in Ireland. In the Canadian 1881 census, Thomas Roper 50 and Nellie 40, Mary 14, Catherine 13 and Emily 8 were living in Lytton and Cache Creek, Yale, BC, Canada, where Thomas was a stockraiser. Nellie ran Kamloops’ first boarding school from 1878 to 1882. Thomas Roper died on November 25th., 1883 in Kamloops, BC, Canada, and was buried, with m.i., in Pleasant Street,Cemetery, Kamloops. In the 1891 census in Yale, BC, Nellie Roper 59, widow, was head of household, with daughter Alice 19, living with her. Thomas and Nellie had issue:
