Thomas was the son of Thomas Rutherfoord, Sr. and Janet "Jessie" Meldrum. He worked with his family in an import/export business before emigrating to the United States in 1784.
In Richmond, Thomas was a prominent mill owner and businessman. He married Sarah on 21 August 1790 in a ceremony conducted by Parson John D. Blair. Thomas and Sarah had at least 13 children: Maria (1791-1793), John, Jane, Mary, Sarah, Thomas (1799-1803), William, Martha, Thomas Meldrum, Samuel, Alexander, Elvira Rebecca (1809-1810), and Augustus Smith.
His son John was a politician and served as a Provisional Governor of the Commonwealth.
He is buried near Sarah and many children and grandchildren in the plot he owned.
Husband of Sarah Winston. They were married 21 Aug 1790. Second daughter Sarah married William B. Randolph of Chatsworth.
