Thomas SMITH arrived in NZ on the ship ‘Matoaka’, with his parents and his grandfather. Assisted Immigration to Canterbury (‘Matoaka’ Manifest 1860, Archives, NZ, Chch Office).
Thomas is buried in Timaru cemetery, block D2 plot 294. There were 6 children in his second family; 2 female, 4 male. On his death certificate their ages are shown to be 17 & 15 for the females and 18, 13, 11 and 6 yrs for the males.
Despite the two families Thomas had, no males have descendants to carry on the SMITH name.
