1626- Arrived in Plymouth, MA.

1638, May 20- His name is on a list of inhabitants admiited to Newport, RI after this date, and soon received a grant of 17 acres there. He is in the employ of Nicholas Easton at this time.

He then moved to Providence, RI where he constructed the first grist mill at the mouth of the Moosausick River for the settlers.

1650- Removed from Providence, RI to Old Warwick, RI.

He built a grist mill at the head of Mill Cove for the settlers.

1652, June 7- Accepted as a townsman of Warwick, RI, having purchased a house there.

1655- Freeman.

1657, April 16- He purchased a house and etc., in Warwick, RI, of Thomas Lawton of Portsmouth, RI.

1657- He had action of trespass brought against him by James Greene and Randall Holden.

1659, March 2- He sold his estate he purchased 6 years before from Christopher Unthank.

1662- He was granted a lot in division of Potawomut and alos one in division of Toseunk.

1673- Deputy.

1677, November 4- He made his will. Proved 27 April 1678.

Thomas came to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1626 and built the first grist mill in the

country, which ground corn with water power. He soon moved on to Providence, Rhode Island where he built the first mill in Rhode Island near Mill Bridge at the north end of town. In 1652, He settled in Warwick and remained there until his death. In Warwick he built another grist mill on a large tract of land.

Thomas Stafford was admitted as an inhabitant to Newport, Rhode Island and received a 17-acre land grant after 20 May 1638. At that time, he was employed by Nicholas Easton.

Thomas bought a house and land on 1 March 1653 from Christopher Unthank. In 1655,

he was a freeman of the colony. Thomas Lawton of Portsmouth sold him a house and land on 16 April 1657. Soon afterwards, he was admitted into Warwick 7 June 1657 when he bought another house from Christopher Unthank.In 1662 he was granted 50 acres in two lots, one in the division of Potawomut and one in the division of Toscunk. Thomas served as a deputy to the general assembly in 1673. His will was dated 4 November 1677 and proved 27 April 1678.

  • (I) Thomas Stafford was born 1605, in Warwickshire, England, and died at Warwick, Rhode Island, in 1677. He is said to have come to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1626, and to have built there the first grist mill operated by water power in this country. His name is on the list of inhabitants admitted to Newport, Rhode Island, after May 30, 1638, and he soon received a grant there of seventeen acres of land, and was mentioned as in the employ of Nicholas Easton. He was witness to a will in Portsmouth, March 18, 1647; was received as a townsman of Warwick, June 7, 1657, having bought a house from Christopher Unthank; bought another house and land from Mr. Unthank, March 1, 1663, and in 1665 was a freeman of the colony. He bought a house and land in Warwick from Thomas Lawton, of Portsmouth, April 16, 1657; in 1667 he was granted a lot in the division of Potawomut and also one in the division of Toscunk; and in 1673 was a deputy to the General Assembly. His will was dated November 4, 1677, and proved April 27, 1679, bequeathing to wife, Elizabeth, and children. She died after 1677. Children: Thomas, died January 26, 1723; Samuel, mentioned below ; Hannah, married Luke Bromley; Sarah, married Amos Westcott; Joseph, born March 21, 1645, at Warwick ; Deborah, married, June 9, 1670, Amos Westcott.
    • (II) Samuel Stafford, second son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stafford, born 1636, lived in Warwick, and died March 20, 1718. He served as deputy to the General Assembly in 1670-72-74-79-82-86-90 and 1705, and in 1674-86 was elected assistant but refused to serve. On February 24, 1671, he and his wife sold to Richard Carder land for twenty pounds, and on September 1, 1700, he gave six shillings toward building the Friends' meeting-house at Mashapaug. He was overseer of the poor in 1687. His will was dated March 16, 1711, and proved April 16, 1718, his son Thomas being executor. He bequeathed to his son, Amos, to daughters, Sarah Scranton, Patience Howland, Freelove Tillinghast and Elizabeth Devotion, to granddaughters, Mary Thurber and Mary Stafford, and to son, Thomas. He married Mercy, daughter of Stukeley Westcott, who died March 25, 1700. Children, born in Warwick: Stukeley, November 7, 1661, died young; Amos, mentioned below ; Mercy, July 8, 1668 ; Sarah, April 18, 1671, married ___ Scranton; Samuel, November 19, 1673, died young; Patience, married Jabez Howland ; Freelove, married Joseph Tillinghast; Elizabeth, married ___ Devotion ; Thomas, born 1682.
