About Thomas Starr
Thomas Starr and his brother Perez came in 1810 from Connecticut in a one-horse wagon to Cleveland, Ohio. In September of that year Thomas settled in Eldredge (later Berlin), Erie County, Ohio. At that time there was only one settler in the eastern part of the township. He got help to raise his house from Florence, Huron, and Milan. On the appointed day, 6 November 1810, six inches of snow had fallen overnight. Soon after sunrise old Mr. Burdue, a kind friend, appeared on horseback with four gallons of whiskey he had brought from Milan for the occasion. The hands soon came, and the house was raised. The two brothers "kept bachelors' hall" there for some time.
