About Thomas Swepson, Jr.

Thomas Swepston (aka Swepson) Jr. was born about 1685 on his parents' plantation in Gloucester County, English Colony of Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Swepston Sr. (1670-1714) and his wife, Ann (Riddick) Swepston (1670-1720).

Thomas Jr. had 2 marriages; it's not certain whether or not his first wife died or that he divorced her; such documents are sadly missing for this time and place. Family genealogies do accept that he had two distinct families before and after 1720.

Thomas Jr. first married Maria M Wright (1683-1757 - probably ca. 1720) of Middlesex County, Virginia Colony, around 1707 in Accomack County, Virginia. They lived in Gloucester County where Thomas, like his father, was a tobacco planter/farmer. They had at least the following 3 children:

  • Mary Swepson (ca. 1710-1798), m.: James Brown in Middlesex County, Virginia on 26 July 1736.
  • Richard Swepson (ca. 1712-1788).
  • Ann Swepson, (1720-1813) m: John Jeffries, 15 Oct. 1738 in Gloucester County, Virginia

Shortly after the birth of her daughter, Ann Swepson, Maria (Wright) Swepson either passed away (most-probable) or the couple divorced (unlikely for that time/place).

Within a year, Thomas Swepson Jr. remarried to Dorothy Virginia (Henry) Lee (1684-1757), recent widow of Charles Lee (1684-1720). She also had several young children to raise. They lived on Thomas' plantation in Gloucester County, where they had a daughter together:

   Sarah Swepson (1726-1795)

Thomas Swepson Jr. passed away on his Gloucester County, Virginia, plantation about 1730 when he was only about 45 years old.

His widow, Dorothy Virginia (Henry) Swepson, married a 3rd time to Thomas Cheney, 1684–1733, a planter in neighboring Middlesex County, Virginia, on 30 September 1731.

She died in Middlesex County, Virginia, on 3 February 1757.
