Thomas Swift was born circa 1755 in Maryland, he is the son of Thomas Swift and Martha Linden-Swift. Thomas along with his parents later relocated to Randolph North Carolina.

Thomas married his first wife, Margaret Patterson-Ward the widow of James Ward. Margaret was born 12 June 1757 in North Carolina, she is the daughter of Nathaniel and Isabel Ward.

Note: It is worth mentioning that Margaret’s first husband James Ward had a brother named Thomas Ward who married Margaret’s sister Jane (Jenny) Patterson. Both James and Thomas Ward along with a third brother, William Ward Jr. were the children of William Ward Sr. and his first wife (who is unknown), William Ward Sr.’s second wife, the stepmother to his three sons, was Elizabeth Swift who was the daughter of Flower Swift and Elizabeth Whitaker-Swift.

1. Jane Swift born 2 March 1781 in NC, married James Nuckolls 2. Martha Pandora Swift born 26 December 1782 in NC, married Leven Kirkman

Margaret Patterson-Swift died circa 1787, Thomas then married his second wife Mary, (parents unknown) circa 1788.

Thomas and his second wife Mary are the parents of nine children

Thomas Swift participated in the regulator movement in North Carolina and was among those who signed the Regulator advertisement # 9 circulated in 1768. The Regulators were a large group of North Carolina colonists led by Herman Husband who opposed the taxation and fee system imposed by colonial officials in the late 1760s. This political argument led to the Battle of Alamance which took place in 1771 between the colonial militia and the Regulators.

Following the Battle of Alamance, 1771 a group of intermarried families including some of Thomas Swift's siblings and their spouses left the Piedmont of North Carolina and moved just across the Virginia border into virgin wilderness along Chestnut Creek and its tributaries. In later years some of Thomas' older children moved to Virginia and Illinois. Thomas and his wife and their the younger children chose to stay in North Carolina.

Thomas Swift made his will on 10 December 1815 he died January of 1816 and his will was probated in the February Term on 1816. In his will he names his wife Mary and leaves his 250 acres to her and requests it be sold and divided among all his children when his youngest child comes of age. Mary Swift wife of Thomas died circa 1837, she is found in the 1830 census for North Carolina but not in the 1840 census.

In the name of God Amen, I, Thomas Swift of the County of Randolph and State of North Carolina doth make this my last Will and testament and that all my just debts to be paid.

First, I Will and bequeath unto Mary Swift my wife two hundred & fifty Acres of Land that I now live on til the youngest child is of age; the land to be sold and she to come in for a child's part for her lifetime. My will and meaning is that each child is to have an equal share when the youngest comes of age.

A good horse & saddle to the boys when they come of age and a good suit of clothes. Sell what they can spare.

My son Alfred to have thirty acres of land Joining Samuel Wood that to be valued at what it would sell at. My wife to have the gray horse and the top mare; my son, Elias, the Soral Colt; to my son Levin, I leave the Brown Colt. I leave my son-in-law Levin Kirkman and my son Alfred, my Executors.

Alfred's land to be valued by two freeholders. Alfred shall have the Sorrel mare and she to be valued. All things to be valued that my first Children has got and account kept of it. If my wife should marry, she shall have no share in the land But she and heirs to have a child's part of the personal property.

This the tenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and fifteen. State of North Carolina, Randolph County, Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, February Term 1816.
