Biography

Thomas was born about 1615. Thomas Symes ... He was baptized on 11 April 1615 at St. Margaret Moses, Little Friday Street in London, England. His first marriage was to Gratia Miller on 30th March 1633 at Netherbury in Dorset, England. Thomas' second marriage was to Amy Bridges <ref>There are notes calling her Lady Keynsham this is highly unlikely as she was the 5th child and 3rd daughter. Not the most likely way to inherit a title. Without sources I would doubt this is a genuine title,</ref> on 3 Jan 1640 in Somerset. Thomas had several children. <ref>The memorial of Thomas and Amy quotes the number of children can any one read this?</ref> He passed away in 1669. Buried at St Peter's Church, Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire, <ref>Now South Gloucestershire.</ref> EnglandI have changed the where born location. Poundisford is not in Chard. This may be the problem with the family tree. There is a wealthy Symes family in Chard it may be the same family but I find it suspect.

Life Sketch

from Findagrave - Fourth and youngest son of John Symes (1573-1661), esquire, of Poundisford Lodge, by his wife Amy Horner, daughter of Thomas Horner (1547-1612), esquire, of Cloford Manor, by his second wife Jane Popham (d. 1591).

Thomas Symes married on June 3, 1640 at St John the Baptist Church in Keynsham, Somerset, to Amy Bridges (1621-1662), daughter of Edward Bridges (d. 1639), esquire, of Keynsham, by his wife Philippa Speke Bridges (d. 1628). A parish register for Winterbourne shows that Thomas Symes "hath given unto the church the summe of 20 shillings for a pew or seate (formerly Mr Williams') in the sayde church." On March 20, 1658 he witnessed the will of Thomas Buck, lord of Winterbourne manor, and in the will of Buck's widow Elizabeth, dated February 25, 1660, "my good friends Mr Thomas Symes & his wife" were each left a mourning ring in remembrance. In 1662 Thomas and his brother Henry Symes assigned the manor of Middlezoy to William Strode of Newnham. In the collection of the Gloucestershire Archives at Clarence Row, Alvin Street in Gloucester, is a volume labeled 'The Guise Family and Its Gloucestershire Properties' [reference no. D326/F1], an account book containing the estate and domestic memoranda of Thomas Symes of Winterbourne, including details of his children's births, his children's education at the 'College School' [later known as the King's School, Gloucester], expenditures and provisions for his children, hearth tax payments, royal aid, etc. from 1663-1670. The collection continues with an account of the estate's next proprietor, William Guise (1648-1716) and his son Henry (1678-1749).

Very little is known about his life, but records indicate that he preceded his father in death. It is Thomas' and Amy's descendants who migrated to VA and were the ancestors of most of the Sims families of VA. It is not known if Thomas and Amy also came to the new world.

From our Sims family archives:

William Symes (b.1540) of Somerset married Elizabeth Hill. As a wedding gift, her father, Robert Hill, gave his daughter, Elizabeth Hill, Poundsford Lodge, which is still standing. John Symes II was the eldest son of William & Elizabeth, and was born on March 4, 1572 at Poundsford. John Symes II and later inherited the Poundsford estate, which has ever remained in the Symes family.

John Symes II married Amy Horner, niece of Thomas Horner, for whom the nursery rhyme ¡§Little Jack Horner¡¨ refers. John graduated from Oxford, was a Member of Parliament, and served as the Sheriff of Somersetshire. John & Amy had three sons and eight daughters. During the English Rebellion, when Oliver Cromwell overthrew the king, John Symes II, as a supporter of the king was forced to leave his estate and take refuge in Gloucestershire where he also owned property. He lived there during the rule of Cromwell. After the monarchy was restored, John Symes II regained his estate (Poundsford) at Somerset, but being old and frail, he was too feeble to return to Poundsford. John died there at the age of 89, on Oct 21, 1661 and is buried at the church at Frampton Cottrell.

Their third son, Thomas, inherited the family estate of his great-grandfather, John Symes of Barwick, and became involved in the mercantile & shipping businesses, sending ships to the new world to bring back products for sales. Thomas Symes married Amy Bridges, who was the daughter of Edward Bridges, Esq., and Phillipa Speke. Thomas and Amy had eight boys and four girls. Several of the younger sons went to the West Indes in connection with the mercantile business that their father had established.

Their fifth son, George Symes Sr. (b. 1651), went to the island of Antigua in the British West Indes as a merchant. Later he became a member of the council in Antigua ¡V part of the governing authority. George Symes eloped with Dorothy Everhard and together they had five children. George Symes died in Antigua in 1688/89 and his will named his brother Henry as the guardian of his children.

The second son, James Symes (Sims) born in 1645, immigrated to Isles Wright, Virginia in 1669. where he married Elizabeth Willmouth, born in 1652 at Isles Wright, Virginia, in 1670. Their first child was born 1671, name of John. They had two other children, thereafter, Robert born in 1674 and Richard born in 1676. James Sims died in 1687. His wife, Elizabeth, died in February, 1729 in Isles Wright, Virginia.

Symes family had several other sons follow James Symes starting in 1670, one of George Symes, Jr., the eldest brother, who also settled in Virginia.
