About Thomas Webb

Thomas Webb, son of William Webb (1814 - 1877) and Sylvia Grey (1807 - 1888), was born 23 May 1845 at Christiana, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica. On 13 June 1866 Thomas married Emily Charlotte Ayers (c.1847 - 1894), and they had fourteen children. Emily Charlotte Webb died in 1894. Three years later, in 1897, Thomas married Amy Campbell (DOB unknown - 1965). Family legend claimed that Amy had been employed by the Webb family as a governess prior to Emily's death, and may also have been Thomas' mistress. She and Thomas had three children.

Thomas and Emily had made an attempt to immigrate to the United States in 1887, but only stayed for a few months. In 1903, Thomas finally did emigrate, leaving Amy in Jamaica. He returned to Jamaica to visit in 1907, 1909, 1912, and 1914, although he reported his marital status as "widowed" in the 1910 US Federal Census and again in the1920 census. Thomas died 1 January 1928 at Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming, United States, and is buried there. The exact location of his grave is unknown at this time. Amy lived until 1965, never remarrying.

From the Webb Family Bible

Entries by Ivy Alder Adelaide Webb (born 26 July 1892 - died 16 Nov 1986). "Thomas Webb was industrious and hardworking. His house in Christiana, Jamaica was the first to have a stove and the first to have a piano. In 1893 he was church warden in the Christiana Church while the Reverend John Cass was the minister. He made three trips to the United States to bring the first sawmill to the Christiana area. During the sawmill venture, the governor of Jamaica was Sir H. A. Blake [from 1889 to 1897]. In 1903, he and the children still at home moved to the United States and settled in Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri. Later he moved to Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming where he died."

Discussion

Family legend indicates that marriage to Amy Campbell took place in Nigeria. Marriage records have been found showing that marriage was indeed in Jamaica. Confusion probably occurred over difference between Bwi, a town in Nigeria, and BWI for British West Indies; as in Jamaica, BWI.
