Her dear mother died only 15 days afterwards, probably from childbirth complications. Christen's 2nd wife Sophia took the young baby, along with her other two siblings, into her family and raised them as her own children. In the fall of 1876 when a Diphtheria epidemic broke out, Thomene was the 2nd of four children to die on October 10th, in the Lee famiy. Little Thomene was only 7 years old at the time and these times were tragic and heartbreaking. “These were the saddest years of Sophia’s life, but she was greatly consoled and strengthened by her visits to the temple.” 4
