About Thompson William Maples
uneral services for the late Thomas William Maples, who passed away yesterday afternoon, were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the chapel of Payne-O'Meara. The remains will be taken to Oakland this evening for cremation.
The deceased was very well known in this county. He had a ranch in the Connors Station district for some years and later moved into the Weed Patch. He was 79 years of age. He was born in Liverpool, England, of Scotch-Irish parents, and came to America with his mother and brother in 1853, coming around the Horn to California. Maples took up ranching in Santa Clara county and was married in 1864 to Miss Elizabeth Merritt at San Jose. Following his marriage he came to Tulare county and later, in 1893, came to Kern county.
The deceased is survived by six children, Mrs. James Ogden and Mr. J. L. Wagy of this city, Mrs. Clive B. Warner of Maricopa and Mrs. Edith H. Reaves, Edward T. Maples and Roscoe W. Maples, residing in other parts of the state. One brother, Stephen Maples, lives at San Jose.
Mr. Maples always took part in public affairs and was deeply interested in politics. He was an organizer of the People's Party in California and was the joint nominee of that party and of the Democrats for secretary of state in 1898. He was a citizen of sterling worth and he enjoyed the friendship of all the old time residents in Kern and Tulare counties.
