Brief overview:
Timothy (18), was beaten to death on a remote Anerley beach, on the South coast, on 14/11/2005
He was killed while studying at the beach on Monday afternoon. At about 13:00 on Monday Timothy Cox left his home in Anerley to go to a remote beach to study, as he usually did in the afternoons.
"At 17:15 when he didn't return his 21-year-old brother Richter went looking for him and first saw his shoes where they were lying in the sand.
"On investigation, he saw blood and indications in the sand where someone had been dragged. He then found his brother's body between the rocks and alerted the police," said police spokesperson Zandra Hechter.
Cox had sustained numerous wounds to the head and was covered in blood. Hechter said the teenager's eyes were swollen shut from being punched by the attacker, who had then dragged him about two metres away to rocks where his head was smashed in.
The book Cox was studying for Wednesday's Afrikaans paper was gone when Richter discovered his brother's body in a crevice between the rocks.
"Detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit thoroughly searched the area to look for clues. A murder docket has been opened," said Hechter.
The gruesome murder shocked even tough policemen, she added.
The Cox family is still in shock and has declined to speak to the media. Hechter said the "quiet, friendly" teenager was writing matric through a correspondence course at Intek College.
He usually walked in the afternoons to an isolated beach at Anerley, the village outside Port Shepstone where his mother and brother live, to study. He generally returned home by 16:00.
Hechter said Richter went to look for his brother after he woke from an afternoon nap and Timothy hadn't come home. Their mother Vera was visiting someone in a home for the aged.

- Two men accused of killing matriculant Timothy Cox met while they were both patients at Sterkfontein Mental Hospital in Krugersdorp, from where they were discharged six months previosly.
- They are being charged with beating Cox, to death at Anerley Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last Monday while he was studying for his last matric exam.
- The two men will be assessed by a psychiatrist to determine whether they need to go for psychological observation.
