About Timothy Swan
One of Suffield, Connecticut's most famous residents, the composer Timothy Swan was born July 23, 1758 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was the eighth son of goldsmith William and Lavinia Swan of Worcester. It was in Groton, Massachusetts, while living with his brother, William Swan, that he attended a singing school, his only known formal musical training. He started composing in Northfield, Massachusetts at age 16, but it was in Suffield that he composed most of his musical pieces. He was 24 in 1782 when he moved to Suffield, where he married Mary Gay, daughter of Ebenezer Gay on May 5, 1784. Timothy and May Swan had a large family, ten children several of which were musicians. On July 23, 1842 at the age of 84, Timothy Swan died in Northfield, Massachusetts.
