A Brief History

Timothy P. Sumner was born in Woodstock, Conn., Dec. 11, 1811 and moved from there to New York State when six years old. There he was married to Hannah Goodrich in 1834. And in 1843 he moved to Fulton County, Ill. He remained there until 1850 when he removed to Henry County, Ill and there his wife died in 1865.
In the following year he married Catherine Betchell, and remained there until 1877, when he moved to Neosho County, Kans., where his wife died in 1895. He lived here until his death, Jan. 16, 1899, aged 87 years, 4 months and 5 days.
He leaves four sons and three daughters, four of whom live here, one in Oregon, one in Iowa and one in Illinois.

Obituary:

Timothy P. Sumner died at his home a few miles southwest of town Monday, Jan. 16, 1899 aged 87 years. The principal cause of his death was old age and general debility, coupled with la grippe.
Mr. Sumner was an old and respected citizen of this vicinity and everybody who knew him was his friend.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. H. Coffield from the Maple Grove schoolhouse and the remains were interred in the Star Cemetery.
The services at the grave were conducted by the G.A.R. Post of the city, of which he was a member.
He had been married twice, but was a widower at the time of his death. He leaves several sons and daughters to mourn the loss of a kind and good father.
