About Timothy Jones Walton

Given name has also been reported to be Timothy Jesse.

Timothy Jones Walton was the overseer of "Echo Manor" a plantation in Wake County, North Carolina owned by Willis Whitaker, who had inherited the plantation from his father in 1823. There is a family story that's been handed down through the generations that, in his old age, Timothy Jones Walton, who was living in the home of his daughter Mary Jane Walton Holcombe, would wander through the home in a state of delirium saying "Oh Sam! I didn't mean to kill you." It was thought that he might have meant a slave on the plantation where he had worked as a young man. Of course with the family name of Samuel running through the family he could have meant a brother or uncle or nephew, or it could just possibly be the ramblings of someone in their twilight years. Most of the information we have for Timothy Jones Walton and family comes from Avery J. Parker of Asheville, N.C. who is descended from William Timothy Killian Walton, the youngest of Timothy Jones Walton and Emma Elvira Haren's children. Also, the family is indebted to Mrs. Sharon Voight of Matthews, North Carolina for allowing us to have copies of the Timothy Jones Walton Bible, which is our source for the father and birthdate of our Thomas McDonald Walton. The bible has also raised some puzzlers for us to ponder and to continue our research. Timothy Walton gives us his birth date and his father's death date. He doesn't mention his mother or any siblings. He does share with us the birth and death dates of his beloved second wife Winafred Collins Nelson Walton and her son, Joseph Nelson's birth date. There is no mention of his first wife or his second son, John Henry Henderson Walton. Here are my conclusions from the records available to me at this time:

Timothy Jones Walton, who was probably named after his uncle, Thomas (Timothy) J. Walton, married first Elizabeth Jones on the 24th of June 1822 in Johnston County, N.C., bondsman was William Avera Walton, Timothy's brother and the witness to the bond was Rm Sanders. I believe Elizabeth Jones Walton to be the daughter of Mathew Jones of Johnston Co., NC. In the 1830 Census for Wake County, N.C., T. J. Walton is listed with one male between the ages of 20-30, one female between the ages of 20-30, and two males under the age of five. I haven't located Timothy Jones Walton in the 1840 Census for North Carolina but, Elizabeth Walton was listed as head of household in Johnston Co., NC, with a female between the ages of 30-40 and one male between the ages of 10-15 (John Henry Henderson Walton). By 1850 Elizabeth Walton was found living in the home of her brother, Mathew Jones and his family in Johnston County, NC, District 5 and the date of enumeration was 29th August 1850. Her age was listed as 48 and John H. Walton, age 21 was listed with her. His occupation was listed as farmer.

Timothy Jones Walton marries the widow, Winafred Collins Nelson on 5th of January 1832, the marriage officiated by C. T. Tally, Esquire and there are supposed children from this union, but I have only the suggestion that there were two sons, Seth Walton and William Walton. What happened to these children or if there were any children, I am uncertain. It would seem likely that their names would have been entered into the Bible, but there aren't any children entered except Thomas McDonald Walton and Timothy Jones Walton's children by Emma Elvira Haren. Winafred Collins Nelson Walton died Tuesday evening the 6th of April AD 1847 and was buried on Thursday the 8th of April 1847 at Col Alexander's Church. Age at her death 42 years, one month and seven days. Thomas McDonald Walton left Buncombe County on Thursday the 5th of September 1848 and became the overseer on the plantation of his father's cousin Wiley Hill, who had died and left the plantation to his son, Lodowick Meriwether Hill.

On the 22nd of January AD 1850, Timothy Jones Walton marries for the third and final time to Miss Emma Elvira Haren of Buncombe County, N.C. The marriage took place at Salem Campground and was officiated by the Reverand Jacob Weaver. They are blessed by five children and Emma Walton died 25th February 1863 and Timothy Jones Walton is living in the home of his daughter Mary Jane Walton Holcombe by 1880. He died 19th of April 1882 in Buncombe County, North Carolina and is buried in the Brank Cemetery. ( I located a book in the Georgia Department of Archives and History, Atlanta, GA entitled, "Cemetery Inscriptions of Buncombe County, N.C., Volume I", compiled by Carolyn C. Aslund and Billie C. Ledbetter, published 1984, and it did have Brank Cemetery listed, but no inscriptions for Timothy Jones Walton or Emma Elvira Haren Walton.) Brank Cemetery is on Reems Creek Rd., Weaverville, North Carolina. I have since visited the cemetery and found no markers for any Walton's buried there, but there were Holcombe's in the cemetery. Joshua and Nancy Mackey Haren, the parents of Emma Elvira Haren Walton are buried at Salem Cemetery, Weaverville, Buncombe County, NC.

Timothy Jones Walton is listed as head of household in the 1830 Wake County, North Carolina Census with two males under the age of five, one male 20-30 years, one female 20-30 years and one slave. By 1850 he was found in the 1850 Census for Buncombe County, NC, pg 198B, Line one, HN 43, FN 43, Walton, T. J., age 49, Male, Occupation Farmer, Value of Estate $750, and place of birth NC. Elvira Walton, age 29, Female, and place of birth NC. There are no children listed with the family. In 1860 we find Timothy Jones Walton and family in Henderson County, NC, Post Office Hendersonville, enumeration taken 16th day of July 1860, PG 90, DW 606, FM 608, T. J. Walton, age 60 Male, Farm Laborer, POB NC, Elmira Walton, age 37 Female, Jesse Walton, age 9 Male, Nancy Walton, age 7 Female, Julia Walton, age 4 Female, and Mary Walton, age 3 Female
