About Tom Octavous Marchant

About Tom Octavius Marchant was the fifth child of George Marchant ; the latter went to Western Australia in 1866 with his wife Jessie Emily Trimmer. In 1873, they went to South Australia".Of interest is an extract from a book prepared for the Australian Defence Dept.: no 24 T O Marchant, Trooper, as a member of the Fourth Imperial Bushman's Contingent, which left Port Adelaide 1 May 1900 in the transport Manhattan and called at Fremantle for the West Australian group They disembarked at Port Elizabeth 19 June 1900. After service, they embarked on 5 July 1901 at East London in The Britannic to arrive at Adelaide 27 July 1901 and disband shortly thereafter. The nominal roll of the Australian Commonwealth Horse included 2751 Marchant, Tom Octavius, Sgt This unit left Port Adelaide 1 April 1902 on the Templemore, landed at Durban 21 April 1902, and their stay was brief for they re-embarked 7 July 1902 in The NORFOLK. Part of the contingent reached South Australia via Albany on 24 July 1902 and the balance on 31 July 1902. {p.16] " the exact date of Tom's arrival in Western Australia is not known but rumour has it that for a short while he worked at the Customs Dept., Fremantle, with his cousin Ernest.--- While in the Murchison, Tom met Lena Grace (Dacie), one of twelve children of Alexander Robert Richardson and his wife Ellen Bates nee Wellard. They married at Lowlands on 8 August 1912 and moved to the 76 mile place, which was known as Tambarmering Brook. They had a family of four girls, Betty, Nancy, Helen, and Judith.---Betty married Guy Ernest Tilbee, and these two purchased half the Tambarmering property when, soon after the end of the Second World War, Tom then in his late sixties, sold to the War Service Lands Settlement Authorities. Tom and Dacie moved to Glen Forrest for a while, and ultimately made their final home in Clive Road, Mount Lawley. .Tom lived until 25 May 1958 and throughout his life usually had a twinkle in his eye .My father Ernest---first cousin to Tom--quite frequently visited the farm for holidays, and when the cousins were together there was little peace. Archie, the Bull, frequently received a sting from a stone propelled from a safe distance from a catapult, but he became wary of approaching humans. Dacie too had her worries with buckets of water placed on top of partly opened doors as a trap for the unwary---so upsetting her otherwise unruffled calm. She was one of those quiet, efficient, self-contained people so admirably suited to the life she had chosen, and had a great regard for her religion. She & Tom battled through the Depression. Their working day started before sun-up harnessing & feeding horses. For them in the early days it was outside toilets, woodheaps, hurricane lamps, and saddle a horse if you wanted to go anywhere. They too qualified as pioneers of their district."[{p 21} [Source: Arthur Noel Marchant : History of the production of the Marchant Family Tree, typescript,1982]
