About Tom Mix

Along a lonely stretch of desert highway between Florence and Tucson, Arizona is a small oasis with a statue of a sad horse named Toni, Jr. This is the Tom Mix Memorial. Just a couple hundred yards south is the wash where Tom Mix met his fate, and which now bears his name. Driving between Tucson and Florence Tom was unable to stop for the barricades marking the washed out bridge and crashed into the wash at high speed. If you are ever on the Pinal Pioneer Highway, stop and visit Tom; sit in the shade of the ramadas and listen to the desert. (by Danny Drollinger)
Tom Mix starred in many Western movies and was an icon of his day. Known as the "King of Cowboys" to later film stars such as John Wayne and Ronald Reagan.
