About Tony Radice

Tony was born to Carmelo Radice and Concetta Piraino on October 3, 1917 at home at 4808 Todd Ave East Chicago, Indiana.

He worked as a Tractor Operator for Youngstown Sheet and Tool Company in East Chicago, Indiana.

He was in the Army-Air Force during WW II as a Staff Sergeant with the 585 Bomb Squadron and with the 394 Bomb Group. He was in the Battles in Northern France Campaign.

His plane was shot down over Northern Germany on the fourth mission and hit a mine. He was MIA for a short time and found hung in a tree with a broken neck, spinal injury and paralyze fingers, which left him a paraplegic . 
He and one other were the only survivors. He stay in the Hines Veteran's Hospital for 29 years.
He was awarded with Honors: Purple Heart, EAME, Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, and a European Theater of Operations Medal with Two Battle Stars.

With his pre-war training he was sent to various locations such as:
Ft. Harrison.
Atlantic City, New Jersy--Co. D 564 Tech Sch Sq arrived there August 1942.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota--656 Tech Sch Sq for Radio Operatons Gradurated on 2-27-1943.
Tucson, Arizona at the Davis Monthan Field-- 61st Bomb Sq arrived there on April1943.
Salt Lake City. Utah--Provisional Reception Sq E.
Casper, Wyoming--464th Bomb Sq. before being sent overseas.
In a letter written by him it shows that on 6-28-1944 he was with the 527th Bomb Sq. and the 379th Bomb Sq. Another letter from him in England dated 3-8-1944 shows him at the 12th Replacement Control Depot.

He belonged to the Paraplegic Veterans of America Vaughan General Chapter. He was also a Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1489, Forest Park, IL and a member of the Italo-American National Union.

He passed away March 3, 1973 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Proviso Township, Cook Co. Hines, IL of Septicemia this is commonly known as blood poisoning.

Obit: Tony Radice, age 55, of 4844 Olcott, East Chicago, Ind. passed away Sat., March 3, 1973 at Hines Veteran Hospital, Hines, Ill.
Survivors: two sisters, Angeline Biagi of East Chicago, Mrs. Rose Ioannacci of Michigan City, Ind.; one step-brother, Mr. Sebastian (Rose) Paratore of Hammond; one cousin, Mr. Michael (Carmella) Spiccia of Crown Point; three nieces and three nephews; with great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wed., March 7, 9:30 a.m. from Huber Funeral Home, 905 W. Chicago Ave., East Chicago, 10 a.m. from Immaculate Conception Church, with Rev Joseph Pusateri officiating. Burial, St. Joseph Cemetery, Hammond.
Friend may call at funeral home today, 2-5 and 7-10 p.m. The rosary will be recited Tues., 8:15 p.m.
Mr. Radice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of East Chicago.
A member of the Cesare Battisti Lodge Lodge No. 27.
He worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. before entering the service.
He served in World War II in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant with the 585 Bomb Squadron with the 394 Bomb Group. His plane was shot down over Northern Germany on the fourth mission, he was wounded and had been in Hines Veteran Hospital for 29 years.
