PAULSON, Torger - WI 6th Inf Co B. Residence: Portland, Monroe County, Wisconsin. Born in Norway. Civil War: Farmer. Married. Age 33. Gray eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, 5’10”. Drafted. Enrolled for one year and mustered on 10 Nov 1864 at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Private. Joined Company B on 17 Dec 1864. Took part in the battles of Hatcher’s Run, Virginia, 6-7 Feb 1865; Gravelly Run, Virginia, 31 Mar 1865; and Five Forks, Virginia, 1-2 Apr 1865. He was at the surrender of General Lee’s army 9 Apr 1865. Detailed as Division Commissary Guard 28 May 1865. Returned to the company on 8 Jun 1865. Torger Paulsen Slaaen was born in Nordre Fron, Norway, Oct 13, 1831, the son of Paul and Kari Torgersen. He emigrated to America in 1856, and settled in Coon Valley on Section 36, Town of Washington, La Crosse County, iin 1856, where he owned 160 acres. He was married to Kari Engebretsen, with whom he had the following children: Mari and Peter. His wife, Kari, died in 1859. In 1863 he was married again to Sophia Pedersen Strømstad, with whom he had the following children: Caroline, Karen, Theodor and Julius. He served in the Civil War. Torger Paulsen Slaaen died 1890 and is buried in the Upper Coon Valley Cemetery [http://wangensteen.net/Bibliotek/coon-valley/index.html#/188/zoomed]
