About Tristram Clark

Ben M. Angel notes:

This would be a person of high interest with respect to the identity of the person known as Tristan Bunker of Nantucket, who was killed in the Scorpion Affair on the coast of Chile. This person is said to have died single. No other information given. Also, there is no Tristram Bunker born in the 1750s-1770s that is known to have died on Oct. 13, 1808, at Quiliimari (present Region IV, Chile). My thoughts are that "Tristan Bunker" is perhaps an assumed name - perhaps Tristram Clark took on his uncle Tristram Bunker's identity as a privateer, or that he adopted his mother's maiden name since that would have been his absolute last name on any Chilean document (maternal apellido). Worth further investigation.

From the William C. Folger genealogical records in the possession of the Nantucket Historical Association. (This compilation has been used because of the valuable clues it affords, but its statements should be received with caution, as it is not free from errors. It should also be understood that in many instances the events recorded did not take place in Nantucket, and in a few cases attention has been called to the question of residence.)
