Ransom Henry Gile enlisted April 5, 1862 with the Co. A 21st Reg. Iowa Vol. Inf.

Ransom was the son of Elijah H. Gile and his first wife, Hannah Keith. His father moved the family to Medina, Ohio and farmed out his children after Hannah died. He then remarried and began a second family.

Ransom appears as Henry R. Gile on the 1850 census at Medina County's Lafayette township, living in the household of farmer John Smith and his family. His birthplace on that census is clearly listed as Massachusetts.

Ransom's other siblings were also farmed out in differed households in Medina County.
