Venotha (51), a widow, was stabbed multiple times in the chest, and found dead in her Egret Road cottage, in Pietermaritzburg, on 25th April 2012. A contractor had called her around 7am that morning to confirm he would be returning. When he arrived and Venotha did not answer the door, he scaled a wall to get into the property. He found the Venotha slumped on her blood-stained bed. Only her bag and mobile phone were missing. Police arrested Skhumbuso Enoch Mkhize (33), a carpenter who had been working at her home. He was arrested in Pakis informal settlement, in Copesville, 24 hours later. Her mobile phone was in his possession. He appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court, and requested bail, which the State opposed. In May 2013, Pietermaritzburg High Court Acting Judge Piet Bezuidenhout sentenced 33-year-old Skhumbuso Enoch Mkhize to life in prison for the murder. Mkhize also received 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
