Vermana 'Kelly' Chetty (1978 - 2018)
Brief overview:
Kelly (40), a Durban businessman, was shot dead by hijackers on Prince Mhlangana Road, in Avoca, Durban North during May 2018. He had gone with his children and a friend to the Lighthouse Fresh Produce store, which was being robbed. Two perpetrators held Don P Phiri, Thandeke Makhaya and Krishna Moodley at gunpoint. They stole cash, cellphones and cigarettes, and after firing a few shots, they ran outside.
One of the perpetrators tried to take Kelly's vehicle, and when unable, he shot him, and hijacked another vehicle, a Toyota Yaris, with two passengers - Ramalingum Chetty and Sanjay Raicoomar.
The next day, police spotted the Toyota Yaris in KwaMashu and tried to stop the vehicle. The men opened fire on the police and a gun battle ensued. Two of the perpetrators, Nkosingphile Lindelani Mdletshe and Mhlanunzima Nazama were shot dead. Police recovered three 9mm semi-automatic pistols and five rounds of ammunition. Spamandla Buthelezi (30), was arrested. He appeared in court, and pleaded not guilty to all the charges. It emerged that one of the guns was used to kill Kelly.

- In February 2020, Buthelezi was convicted of murder. He was also found guilty on other related charges. Judge Nonhlanhla Dube sentenced him to life imprisonment.
- Spamandla Buthelezi was sentenced to life and 136 years imprisonment in the Durban High Court this week for the robberies, attempted murders and the murders he committed in January 2016 and May and June in 2018.
