Vernon D. Troyer 84, of Strasburg, Ohio, died Sunday morning, Dec. 18, 2011 in his home following a brief illness. Born April 4, 1927 in Hartville, Ohio, he was the son of the late David and Katie (Sommers) Troyer. Vernon was a truck driver for over 60 years having retired this past October from Ohio Carrier in Dover. He was a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan. He was a member of the Dover VFW and Eagles Lodge and a member of the Pine Hill Hunting Club. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Patty (Wenger) Troyer who died Nov. 2 this year following 64 years of marriage. He will be sadly missed by his five sons and their families, Vernon (Deborah) Troyer, Randy (Jody) Troyer, Gary (Cindy) Troyer and Rick Troyer all of Strasburg and Toby (Edith) Troyer of New Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step great- grandchildren; two sisters, Amanda (Emmanuel) Schlabach of Winesburg, Lucindia (Eli) Yoder of Wooster; three brothers, Dave (Anna) Troyer of Berlin, Raymond (Ila) Troyer of Beach City and Manassas (Carol) Troyer of Louisville and his cockatiel buddy, Rocky. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Victoria Lynn Troyer along with two brothers and two sisters. A funeral service celebrating Vernon's life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in the Strasburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynda Masters officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife Patty in the Dover Burial Park. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Tuesday from 5-8pm.
