" ... Mein Vater ist in Wien geboren, kam aber als junger Mann nach Italien und verliebte sich in Land und Leute, also blieb er... Während dem Krieg wurde er in Italien (Abruzzen) interniert und war 3 Jahre lang gefangen. Allerdings wurden die Juden in den italienischen "Campi" nicht misshandelt obwohl sie natürlich erbärmlich lebten. Als im Sommer 43 der Faschismus in Italien zusammenbrach waren die Lager unbeaufsichtigt und mein Vater floh richtung Süden wo er dann mit den Allierten zusammentraf und arbeitete. Sein Lager war knapp unter der Front Grenze, das hat ihm das Leben gerettet, denn all die Juden die nördlicher inhaftiert waren, wurden von den Nazis in aller Eile nach Norden deportiert und ermordet...." During the war he was interned in Italy (Abruzzo) for three years. Nevertheless, the Jews in the Italian "Campi" were not mistreated, although they, of course, lived in wretched conditions. In the summer of 1943, when Fascism started falling apart in Italy, the camp was suddenly no longer supervised and my father was able to escape southwards, where he encountered the Allied forces and worked for them. His internment camp was situated just below the front line, that is what saved his life, as all the Jews placed in camps further north were hurriedly deported northwards by the Nazis and murdered there ..."
