3 CONT PROFESSOR Theodore William Buchwald, active member of the Sydney

Jewish community and prominent academic, has died. He was 69.

Professor Buchwald's generous nature and passionate approach to Jewish

causes were recognised by Cremorne synagogue Rabbi Shmuel Cohen, who

delivered the eulogy. In addition to his involvement with Cremorne

Synagogue, Professor Buchwald was active in the Friends of the

Technion in Haifa.

"Ted Buchwald felt a responsibility for his fellow-Jew," Rabbi Cohen

said. "The story of his life is amazing. He not only helped Australian

Jews, but also those around the world."

Late last year, Professor Buchwald went to Fiji to assist Pacific

University improve its academic standards. While there, he led the

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kipper services for the diminutive Jewish

community. He combined his desire to help people with his love of

academics when he helped Russian Jewish immigrants attain jobs in

Australia. "He used to say I cannot help merchants - so I will help

academics',"Rabbi Cohen said.

Professor Buchwald was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, on

September 9,1929.

Although his childhood was fraught with frequent relocation, he

excelled academically. In 1939, he moved with his mother to England on

a domestic worker's visa obtained from Lady Bonham-Carter. When the

family was reunited in England, the children had to move to foster

homes, and Ted lived with the Freedman family in Manchester,

studying at a yeshiva.

His fate as a "wandering Jew" continued when he was forced to

move to Blackpool

due to the Blitzlfl-ieg bombardments during World War II. He attended

the University of Manchester on a scholarship, and after

graduating, obtained a Master of Science and a Ph.D from London


He and his wife Gita immigrated to Australia, where he became a

senior lecturer at Sydney University from 1961-68.

He was appointed dean of the Faculty of Science and head of

the School of Mathematics at the University of New South Wales. He

also served as senior lecturer from 1969 to 1989. He acted on the

board of developing curriculum for mathematics. He retired in 1989 at

the age of 60.

Professor Buchwald was a pioneer in the field of oceanography at

the University of NSW.

The funeral was held at Northern Suburbs Cemetery.Professor

Buchwald is survived by his wife Gita brother Herbert, sister Naomi,

children Rachel, Simon and David, son-in- law Robert,

daugher-in-law Carmel, grandchildren Sara, Daniel and Sam.
