About Vincent Vinson Runyon, III

Vinson Runyan married (1st) Elizabeth Woolverton (Wolverton) while still living in New Jersey. Elizabeth Wolverton, born June 14, 1765, was a daughter of Isaac, Jr., granddaughter of Isaac, Sr., and a great-granddaughter of Charles Woolverton, who came from England.

About 1801, Vinson and Elizabeth Runyan, with their three oldest children,

  1. Eleanor,
  2. Aaron and
  3. Philip Edington Runyan

moved to Cayuga (in 1804 it became Seneca) County, NY. The Philip Edington family came with them to New York.

Vinson's wife, Elizabeth died on April 26, 1813. She is buried in the Burgh Cemetery in Seneca County, NY. Philip and Eleanor Edington are also buried in the same cemetery.

Vinson married (2nd) Lavisa (Vicey) Edington on June 28, 1814. She was the widow of his half-brother, Aaron Edington. It is thought that Vinson and Lavisa had a son,

  1. Josiah C. Runyan, born in 1821-22.

Vinson died on September 17, 1844. He is buried in Mapes Cemetery, Gorham, Ontario County, NY.

94. VINCENT5 RUNYAN III (VINCENT4 RUNYON II, VINCENT3, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 1767 in Hopewell, New Jersey, and died 17 September 1844. He married (1) ELIZABETH WOOLVERTON in Hopewell, New Jersy, daughter of ISAAC WOOLVERTON. She was born 14 June 1764, and died 26 April 1813. He married (2) LOVISA EDINGTON 28 June 1814 in Ontario County, New York.

Notes for VINCENT RUNYAN III:

Vincent Runyan inherited land originaly owned by Thomas Runyan and Martha Dunn, from his grandfather Vincent Runyan after the death of his grandmother Mercy Bonham Smith in 1797. In 1800 he sold the major portion of that land to John Drake for $2400. He sold another parcel to Asa Hunt for $400. He than moved to Washington, Cayuga County, NY which in 1808 became known as Fayette, Seneca County, NY.

Vincent became the first Town clerk of Fayette, NY in 1809. Later, he became the town's coroner.

From 1800 - 1814 Vincent bought and sold several large parcels of land.

During the year of 1814, Vincent moved from Fayette to Gorham, Ontario County, NY, where he continued to buy and sell real estate. In 1815, he owned a grist mill located on Flint Creek. He sold that property and an additional 56 acres to a Mr. Coleman for $5000. On January 9, 1819 Mr. Coleman sold the property to George D. and Samuel Stewart, however Vincent was sued by the former mill owner, Levi Benton, Jr. who won the court action on October 31, 1818, and the mill property was seized to satisfy the $2800 judjement. The property was sold January 23, 1819 at auction, with the Stewarts again purchasing it for $1650.

Vincent and Lovisa lived on a farm on Flint Creek, north of Gorham in Seneca township, Ontario County, NY. During the year of 1840, Vincent's son Isaac W. Runyan and Lucus Standley (Lucus Stanley was the husband of Vincent's daughter Sally) sued Vincent, and as a result, Isaac W. Runyan became the owner of the farm.

V. - Elizabeth Runyan 26 Jun 1764. She married by about 1790 Vincent Runyan. A letter dated 11 February 1938 from a Mrs. R. C. (Mabel) Runyan Beebe, 327 North Keyston Avenue, Sayre, Pennsylvania, in the files of the Hunterdon County Historical Society, claimed that a Vinson / Vincent Runyan, Jr. married Eleanor Runyan Edington Williams, who married (2) Eleanor Runyan Edington Williams, and that a son of Vinson and Eleanor, born about 1767m, died in New York state, having married Elizabeth Wolverton. Children: Philip Edington, Aaron, Isaac W., David, Eleanor. He then married (2) Louisa Chapman Edington.

Hon. Philip Edington Runyan (1799-1845), son of Vincent and Elizabeth Wolverton, removed to White Pigeon, Michigan, and was a representation in the Michigan legislature in 1834.

Mrs. Beebe's letter also says that Vincent Runyan, the father, was the son of an earlier Vinson or Vincent Runyan or Runion, 1700?-1771, who married Mercy Smith. If she is correct, he would be the Vinson Runyan of Hopewell Township, Hunterdon county who in his will dated 27 Oct 1770 and probated 25 November 1771 mentioned wife mercy, grandson Vinson and executors his wife Mercy and Timothy Smith. Roger Wolverton Elizabeth's grandfather, had witnessed the will of Thomas Runyan of Hopewell Township Hunterdon county, dated 30 October 1738, which mentioned sons Vincent and Thomas.

On 22 April 1800 Vincent Runyan of Hopewell Township Hunterdon county,and Elizabeth his wife conveyed an eleven acre woodlot in Hopewell township to Asa Hart. Both signed their names. On 1 May 1800 Vincent Runyan of Hopewell township Hunterdon county, and Elizabeth, his wife conveyed a number of lots of land to John Drake

They left New Jersey shortly after the sale for in 1801 Philip Eddington and Vincent Runnion were listed consecutively as electors of Washington township Cayuga county New York. Vincent Runyan and Philip Edington were among the early settlers of the town of Lafayette, Seneca county New York. A special town meeting was held at the house of Vincent Runyan on 7 July 1804. By deed dated 7 May 1828 Vincent Runyan donated land for the Burgh cemetery to the Town of Lafayette
