The Venter couple drove out in their bakkie early in the morning at their home in the Lubanzi area near Hole-in-the-Wall when the robbers started shooting at the van.

Venter's son, Dan, said "Three of the men with firearms were wearing gloves and the fourth man was unarmed. My mother shouted to my father that there was trouble when she saw one of the men holding a firearm, but it was too late". "The man who shot my father ran around to kill my mother. She grabbed our revolver and fired six shots at them," Venter Jr. said.
