In the 1930 Census, Viola Davis nee Kee was 14 years old, married to Cornelius Davis age 19 and head of household with his wife Viola, mother Pinkie (age 58), brother W? (age 29), sister-in-law Ella? (age 20), and three nephews (age 6, 8, 10). Cornelius and his brother reported being farmers earning $100 and $101 respectively.

In the 1940 Census, Viola Davis nee Kee was 24 y.o., married to Cornelius Davis, age 27. She reported that her highest grade completed was 4th grade. She reported that on April 1, 1935, she was living in Roanoke, Halifax County, NC. She reported that she was a housewife.

Her husband Cornelius Davis age 27 y.o., highest grade completed was 4th grade. On April 1, 1935 he was living in Roanoke, Halifax Co, NC. He worked as a handyman in the restaurant industry. He reported that in 1939 he worked 36 weeks and made a total of $300.

Also living with them (according to the 1940 Census) was Viola Davis' sister Lizzie Snow nee Kee, age 23, completed 3 years of school, and her husband Richard Snow, age 24, completed 1 year of school. Richard Snow reported being a laborer in the construction industry who had been employed for 26 weeks as of March 30, 1940, earning $0 in the year 1939.

Also according to the 1940 Census, their son Arthur ("Jack") Davis (age 9) was living with his grandmother, Viola Davis's mother Flossie Kee, down in Seaboard, Northampton Co, NC. Also living in the same household was Viola Davis' brother Square Boy (age 26), Viola Davis' youngest sister Catherine/Katherine Phillips nee Kee (age 17), and Lizzie and Buster's daughter Irene Snow (age 5).
