About Wallace Porter
Jan. 15, 1913 (Wednesday), one of baby Wallace's uncles (Ralph W. Porter) writes in his diary: "partly cloudy, chilly wind, The house [Porter Estate, Higganum, Connecticut] has been full of excitement and joy for Whit and Mabel have a baby boy [Wallace] and he is a dandy, lively youngster. The nurse came in on the 7.30 train this morning and he arrived at two o'clock this afternoon. Phil [another uncle of baby Wallace] went after rabbits with Jen (?) tonight but did not get any." Baby Wallace was born in the Higganum house.
Sept. 1, 1934 (Saturday) May have been the wedding day of Wallace Porter and Helen Fredrickson.
April 15, 1937 (Thursday) Wallace has the measles.
1940--Wallace Porter is residing with his wife (Helen Fredrickson Porter) on Maple Hill Road, Haddam, Connecticut.
Oct. 1944 (Somewhere in the South West Pacific)--Wallace Porter is serving in some capacity in the U.S. Navy. He is hospitalized, his head having been injured in an accident on board some ship. [The accident happened sometime before October of 1944]. In a letter, dated Oct. 23, 1944, Lt. Cmdr. Philip Wells Porter, Jr., U.S.N. (Wallace's much younger first cousin) writes Philip's own parents (Philip, Sr. and Orvilla) from somewhere in the "S. W. Pacific": "I have been wondering how Wallace is. I have tried several times to get to his hospital, but as yet I have been unable to arrange it. I imagine that by now he has been evacuated, but I have no way of knowing.".
Oct. 24, 1981--Wallace Porter marries Mabel Spencer Hajek.
Dec. 20, 1989--Wallace Porter dies. His remains are interred in the Cypress Cemetery, Old Saybrook, Connecticut, in the same plot as his parents. The remains of his first wife (Helen Fredrickson Porter) are also interred in the plot. On the plot there is a marker for his second wife (Mabel Spencer Hajek Porter), but her remains are interred elsewhere.
Wallace served in the U.S. Navy in World War, II; delivered heating oil in the Haddam, Connecticut area; and worked on an oil tanker that plied the Connecticut River. [subject to verification].
